Introducing Vantrex: Building a Better Way to Deploy and Operate Applications
A new approach to application deployment and infrastructure. Built independently, with a focus on making the internet easier to build on.
Today, we're introducing Vantrex — an infrastructure platform designed to simplify how developers deploy, manage and operate their applications.
What started as an ambitious project to explore deployment infrastructure has grown into something much bigger. We're building the foundations of a platform that brings application deployments, edge infrastructure, security, analytics and operational tooling together.
Our goal is simple: make powerful infrastructure more accessible without making developers manage unnecessary complexity.
Why Vantrex?
Modern application infrastructure is powerful, but it can also be complicated.
Deployments, hosting, networking, security, monitoring and infrastructure management often involve multiple services, providers and tools. For developers, especially smaller teams and independent builders, getting everything working together can become a project of its own.
We believe developers should be able to focus on building their applications rather than spending all their time managing the infrastructure behind them.
That's the idea behind Vantrex.
We're building a platform that aims to bring these capabilities together through a unified experience, while maintaining the flexibility and control developers need.
What we're building
Vantrex has grown beyond its original deployment foundations. Today, several core components are already running.
Application deployments
Our deployment platform provides a way to build and publish websites and applications.
We're developing an immutable deployment model, where each deployment receives its own unique version and URL. This allows deployments to be tracked independently and provides a foundation for safer releases and future rollback capabilities.
We're also working towards a more flexible runtime architecture, with the goal of supporting modern application workloads without relying entirely on long-running application containers.
Edge infrastructure
Applications need more than somewhere to run. They need reliable connectivity and efficient delivery.
Vantrex includes its own edge runtime and routing infrastructure, providing the foundation for handling incoming requests and connecting users to deployed applications.
We're continuing to develop this infrastructure with the longer-term goal of expanding across multiple regions and improving how applications are delivered globally.
Security and traffic protection
Security is an important part of the platform, not an afterthought.
Vantrex has its own firewall service that actively evaluates incoming traffic and blocks requests matching configured security rules.
We're also developing more advanced security capabilities, including application-level WAF functionality, allowing developers to configure rules, match suspicious traffic patterns and control which requests are permitted to reach their applications.
Our edge infrastructure is also being developed with additional protection and monitoring capabilities to help identify suspicious activity.
Analytics and visibility
Understanding application traffic is important for operating any application.
Vantrex includes an analytics dashboard that provides visibility into incoming traffic, including:
- Human and automated traffic.
- Browser and client information.
- Geographic distribution of visitors.
- Traffic patterns and activity.
We're continuing to expand these capabilities to provide developers with more insight into how their applications are being accessed and used.
Platform monitoring and status
Infrastructure needs to be observable, and users deserve transparency when something goes wrong.
We've developed an internal operations console, a monitoring and status API, and a public status page.
These systems work together to support incident management and service visibility.
When an incident is published, status information can be updated across the public status page and the Vantrex dashboard. Users can also receive email notifications about service status changes.
This gives us a foundation for communicating incidents, maintenance and service availability as the platform grows.
Built with security and reliability in mind
As Vantrex grows, we're putting increasing emphasis on operational security and reliability.
This includes monitoring incoming requests, investigating suspicious activity, developing firewall controls and improving visibility across our infrastructure.
We believe infrastructure providers have a responsibility to be transparent about their services and to build systems that can be properly monitored, maintained and secured.
Reliability isn't something we can simply promise. It's something we need to continuously work towards through testing, monitoring and engineering.
What's next?
Vantrex is still under active development, and there's plenty more we want to build.
Our longer-term direction includes:
- Multi-region infrastructure: Expanding deployment and routing capabilities across geographical regions.
- Advanced application security: Developing configurable WAF rules and more detailed traffic controls.
- Improved deployment runtimes: Expanding support for modern application workloads and serverless execution.
- Infrastructure services: Exploring additional services that make hosting and application management easier.
- Expanded observability: Providing deeper insights into application traffic, infrastructure health and operational events.
We'll be developing these capabilities incrementally, prioritising stability, security and real-world usefulness over simply adding features.
An independent project with a bigger ambition
Vantrex is being built independently, driven by an interest in networking, infrastructure, software engineering and the systems that make the internet work.
We're taking inspiration from the infrastructure platforms developers already rely on, while exploring how we can build our own approach to deployment and infrastructure management.
We also intend to explore an open-source direction, giving developers greater visibility into the technology and an opportunity to contribute as the project matures.
We're not claiming to have everything figured out. There is still a lot to learn, build and improve.
But the foundations are taking shape, and we're excited about where this project can go.
Welcome to Vantrex
We're building Vantrex with a simple ambition: make it easier to build, deploy and operate applications.
Whether you're an independent developer, a small team or someone interested in the infrastructure behind the internet, we'd love to have you follow along.
This is only the beginning.
Welcome to Vantrex.
